THE TIPPLING PHILOSOPHER
This is another name I spotted on a sub sign many years ago. Possibly in the West Country. I knew it would come in useful one day. This is my more contemplative blog name.
I'm sure I shall come across more details one day. I like doing my own research rather than tapping Google on a computer. I much prefer a tap room in a pub.
Inns and Pubs are our oldest surviving and flourishing institutions in Britain. You may say churches, but in many cases inns were used to house the masons before the churches could be built. You may still get a pew in a church but not with a pie and a pint in front of a cheerful open fire.
Both Inns and Churches are our history and heritage however. They should both flourish. You don't need to belong to a religion to enter a church, and a teetotaller can be welcome in a pub without having to touch a demon drop.
'Never demolish a Church or an Inn' is a cry that has echoed down quite a few centuries.
Butchers, bakers and candlestick makers are vanishing along with Post Offices, Schools, Playing Fields and Farms. Churches and Pubs are fast becoming the last traces of inheritant stability.
